Poker Chips for Home Game

Hello all,
I have a weekly home game that is a lot of fun. We have a nice poker table, nice KEM cards and sh*t chips. heh.

I was wondering if any of you can advise me on some decent chips to buy. I'm looking for around 1000 chips or more. I want quality chips that are aesthetically pleasing, and easy on the wallet.

i like the plain solid colored ones. that way you can use them for cash or tournies and not have to worry about denominations..

They are rare denoninations for a reason. If you get this set, you'll find that some of the chips never get used.

I'd recommend a set with:

White: Can be used as $1 or $0.01 for cash games, or as $t1000 in tourneys.

Red: Used as $5.

Green: Used as $25.

Black: Used as $100.

POSSIBLY purple: Handy as $500s, but definitely not essential.


Really try to put some thought into the denominations you really need, and the numbers of each you're likely to require before you buy, then try to find a merchant that will fill your exact specific needs. It sucks bigtime when you continually run out of black and green chips, but always have a massive surplus of blues (that you only used twice before deciding they're more trouble than they're worth).

The chips you refer to are too heavy for my own personal taste (14g). We play with 11,5g chips and I think they are already heavy enough. It can get tough doing fancy chip tricks with chips as heavy as 14g. 9g is generally used in most casinos. The problem here is that, in my opinion, composite chips of 9g appear somewhat cheap since they are not clay or clay composite (that's why I think "dice" or "suited design" composite chips need the extra grams to feel better) - if you have real clay chips, 9g is the ultimate poker chip experience.
I'm not much of a friend to denominations printed on the chips, because you get confused once you need to change the distribution or the denomination. If you stick to the standard colors like white, red, green, black, purple and yellow, everybody will know the denomination at a glance. [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

However, that's just my personal opinion. I know there are people out there that prefer 14g - why not! [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

A lot of players worship Paulson's Clay Poker Chips: www.pokerchips.com
Their feel and look seems unsurpassed. Yet, telling from what I've heard, Paulsons chip over time, they'll get scrached and marks. That's why I prefer the composite chips because they are not that easily chipped.

You might not be happy in the long run with chips that have imprinted denominations. I have been using heavy clay, solid color chips- same set for about 30 years. The only thing I would change is I bought a 5 color set. Mostly use 3 colors but sometimes use 4. As far as weight or solid color vs multi color. I think thats just personal choice. Composite vs clay? Meh. I like the heavy clay chips myself.

I have heavy (13.5g) clay composite chips. They look cool and stuff, but they're a bit cumbersome when in big stacks, and chip tricks with them are a bitch (not that I have skill in this area). I like 11.5g ones the best.

I have those chips you linked and frankly they are pretty plasticy. The weight of the chip is due to a metal insert. The price is ok, but I like Nexgen. They don't have a sticker but you can print out your own if you need to.

You can get purple and yellow Nexgen chips as well if you want to build a good tourney set. Purple are usually 500 and yellow are 1000. My buddy uses the blues as 5000 (they are usually 50).

If you are looking for cheap but good, I'd recommend the NexGen chips. Clay is best though -- Paulson, etc. Nevada Jacks also have "ceramic" (not really ceramic but feels like it) chips which are mid-way between the ABS/composite & clay chips.
