I need help getting my wireless to work
Here is what I have:
Desktop Laptop Cable Modem Wireless Router CD for router Wireless Card I have a cable cord going to the modem, then an internet cord (whatever its called) going to the "internet" part in the back of the wireless router. I then have another internet cord coming from the back of the router and going to the desktop and I can get online fine. But when I put the wireless card in the laptop It wont get online, it says there is no wireless connection in the area. Any help? Edit: I havent used the CD, when I go to install it on the desktop it says the computer is already hooked up to the router. When I try to install it on the lap top it says the computer is not online, therefore cant install. FWIW, I used wireless in my dorm all year, but it was the schools connection. Thanks |

Re: I need help getting my wireless to work
I'm almost clueless with this stuff, but try using the desktop to go to 192.168.1.1 and check the settings on the router. Maybe you've got the wireless turned off on it?

Re: I need help getting my wireless to work
also check to make sure that your laptop wireless is set to access first available network. it may have been setup to only look for the school's network.

Re: I need help getting my wireless to work
I'm sure others will chime in here but I'll start it off....
1) What brand and model # router do you have? 2) What brand laptop? 3) Does the laptop run XP? That info will help us get started. You obviously have the router hooked up correctly to the cable or you wouldn't be able to get the desktop online. Nomad brings up a good point about making sure you have the wireless radio turned on. However, most routers require you to go to 192.168.0.1 Linksys routers in particular default to the 192.168.1.1 Just wanted to point that out. Nomad brings up a good |

Re: I need help getting my wireless to work
The Router is Linksys WRK54G and the laptop is a Dell Inspiron running XP.
I went to 192.168.1.1 and it asked for a username and PW, I always thought you just typed "Admin" for the username, and didnt need a PW but it was rejecting me so I couldnt log-in. Also, FWIW I have never used this router before, it is new.
