Can Derek Jeter catch Pete Rose in hits?
I looked up Jeter's stats. Through his first 11 years not counting 1995 or this year, he is only 14 hits behind Rose was after his 11th season. That is pretty amazing. I don't know what age Rose or Jeter were when they became full time players, but I assume it's close. Does he have a decent shot?
BTW- Interestly, I checked out A-Rod's numbers. He basically has the same # of hits that Jeter has and is a year younger. But I assume becaue he is a power hitter, he will end up sacrificing too many cheap hits that Jeter gets. |

Re: Can Derek Jeter catch Pete Rose in hits?
Rose debuted at 22 and played until he was 45.
Jeter debuted at 21 but only for 15 gms. 22 yrs old was his first full season. He's 33 now with 2200 hits. Can he get 200 hits per season for the rest of his career? If so then he could make it by 45. But again, this would be 200 hits EVERY season for the rest of his career. At 39-45 Rose hits per season was 172, 121, 107, 107, 107 and 52. Okay, looking at it more closely. After 1973 when Rose was 32 he had 2152 hits. Jeter at 33 right now has 2207 hits. This is way closer than I thought. Damn. The key would be Jeter's next few seasons because he sure ain't going to be racking up a zillion hits after he's 40 I would assume. Rose from 34-39 years old had seasons of 210, 215, 204, 198, 208, 195. So for Jeter to have any shot of doing it he has to do as Rose did and put up some really good numbers in his mid and late 30's. For a guy likw Jeter I assume this actually is a possibility. But one doubts whether he would keep on playing until he's 45 or 46. If the record is close enough for him though I guess there actually is a shot. My previous post was my original hunch/instinct of course. But I'm revising my opinion now because I think it isn't completely impossible. |

I would guess there have been a number of players who had the same number of hits as Rose after 11 years. It's hard to get 200 hits per year until you're 38 and play until you're 42, though.

That was exactly what I said when I looked at his numbers earlier; Damn, it's close. That's why I couldn't figure out why you thought there was no way it could happen. Now of course, I don't THINK it will happen. But it should be interesting in 8 or 9 years how close he is. |

If Jeter would just [censored] stop walking so damn much he would be the best hitter ever.

Re: Can Derek Jeter catch Pete Rose in hits?
If Jeter can maintain the pace he is on this year, he will end the year with 2,373 hits and be 33 at the end of the season. If he can somehow manage to average 200 hits per season until he's 40, he'll have 3,773 hits at that point. Then he'd only need to play 5 more seasons at 100 hits per season to pass Rose. So obviously he's got it in the bag.

Here's another question. If he breaks Rose's record, is he still overrated?
