Default What\'s the easiest way to get an official handicap?

I feel like a total doofus asking this because I've been playing for like 12 years. I've always calculated it myself.

I'm not a country club type guy, so I don't want to join a private club.

So what's the easiest (cheapest) option? I live in the Austin area, if that matters.

i started entering scores in yahoos. It seems to have most golf sites (certainly the ones I play at have been there). But yeah, I saw that there were more than a few sites to choose from.

Yahoos one you can enter round scores or holebyhole. I assume others are similar? I don't know what the matters, but I'm sure it is crooshal.

Give the usga.org site a visit. I'm sure they'll be able to help. Usually you can play at some public/muni courses and send them into an org. (might be the USGA) and they'll give you a h'cap.

I would start at the state association. Call them or check their website and find out. My guess is that you can pay a fee either directly or through a public course and get a handicap.

Yep. Texas Golf Association has the info you're looking for. Looks like they do have at least one "club without real estate" for handicap purposes.

State the way to go. Dues are cheap per year. Probably $20-50 depending on the state. They will have all the courses in a database probably and you can enter your scores online if they are with it. After a few rounds you'll have a handicap. Make sure you play by the rules though or it's meaningless.
