ok I watched some videos of both. It seems as though romanian deadlift is a little safer for the lower back and therefore a better option. Thoughts?

DLK,

I do both. I prefer a wider stance for squats etc and so I do some RDL and good mornings to help bring my torso upright if I eff up form so I don't die.

I usually do mine from a step so I can get a fuller ROM, I assume you can ground or not ground though.

The proper exercise is just to bring it down below the knees. How far you go below that is probably more a stretch on your hamstrings than on your back though.
