Top NCAA Basketball Coaches

Here's the Sports Illustrated list.

I'd look at it a little differently, since I think age matters. I think the right approach is "if you were an AD, which coach would you choose to hire tomorrow".

Their list:

My list based on who I would want to hire, assuming he would be guaranteed to stay for at least 5 years.

5. Ben Howland (50)
6. Tom Izzo (53)
7. Calipari (48)
8. Lon Kruger (55)
9. Billy Gillispie (48)
10. Tim Floyd (54)

Notable omissions of Coach K (62) and Calhoun (65), simply too old to start from scratch IMO.

I just don't see him getting the same top flight recruits, and I think he's lost a little as a game coach. Def top 20, likely top 15.

If you were to make a pie graph how would you distribute recruiting, coaching & age in terms of importance?
Certainly recruiting has to be priority #1.

Dunno. Off the top of my head:

Recruiting 60%
Coaching 25%
Age 15%

The thing is that age is reflected in their current recruiting and coaching IMO, so it's really not a fair breakout. Just thinking off the top of my head.

I'm still not sure how much is Matta recruiting and how much is walking into a great situation. Ohio has been absolutely loaded. The Mike Davis situation at Indiana left that state for grabs. He was never known as a recruiting stud at Butler and Xavier. I have him top5 for sure, but not sold on #1.

The thing with Matta is he's now pulled off not just one, but two totally insane recruiting classes. Like, tops of all-time type classes. Hard to overlook that considering he can also gameplan and is only 40 (was shocked to see his age when I looked it up).

I love Izzo too. Self was a tough one cause he can't coach a lick, but man, he can recruit. I likely have him a few spots too high.

The guy knows his Xs and Os. Give any of the other coaches on the list Gansey, Pittsnogle, and Herber, and they struggle to make the tournament, never mind come within a half of the Final Four. My guess is that SI isn't factoring in recruiting nearly as heavily as Clark is.

yep....from what I heard that is part of the reason he didn't get the Illinois job when Weber was hired. It's clear Matta is on the move and has the NBA dreams of a young man. He's been hired at a young enough age to become one of the historical greats. I just wish he'd leave the big11ten.
