Default thayers question from the jeter thread

POSITION PLAYERS ONLY SO STATS CAN BE COMPARED EASILY

starting a team 10 years ago knowing what we know now who would u pick over jeter.... i'll start in no particular order

Bonds MAYBE (lets not discuss this to much steroids injuries blah blah blah could get to long) (maybe throw giambi in that boat)

Arod (obviously, better than jeter at everything except productive outs , but ya obviously thats not a huge deal)

Pudge

Vladamir

Abreu maybe?

manny maybe? (i vote no but i'd like to hear other opinions)

add to the list.. take away from the list... i'll make a list in order including jeter once i here from some people

The only guys who have produced over nearly that entire periods are:

Bonds
A-Rod
Andruw
Jeter
Chipper
Rolen
Piazza
Edmonds
Giambi
Manny
Sheffield
Delgado
Vlad
Helton

I take:

Bonds
A-Rod
Piazza
Edmonds
Rolen
Vlad

Helton, Sheff, and Manny are close. The rest are on the tier below.

JoA,

I think he was including all future production as well. Wouldn't that shove Mike, Edmonds, Rolen pretty solidly off the list? And make Bonds debatable... If Jeter plays another 5-7 seasons, and Bonds finishes this one out?

Does 9 seasons of best player ever beat out 5-8 more of a Hall of Famer at a much more dificult position?

At the same time, however, it would make the argument for guys like Pujols, Cabrera, Reyes, Mauer, McCann, Hafner

JoA,

Yeah, but I was gonna limit it to guys who were in the majors 10 years ago.

BTW I didn't put question marks to try and make my comments seem less pretentious. Those are actual questions.

i think it's kind of silly to pick anyone who is a corner OF or even 1B. obv SS is not a position you cannot easily fill with a top-10 offensive guy. basically Jeter's position VORP forces you to pick a great SS, 3B, or C. an argument could be made for CF as well.

although i guess it's definitely nearly impossible to find a LF (or RF) that matches the 10-yr VORP of Bonds. i think it's easier to do that for vlad.

I don't know what you are talking about exactly, but its pretty common for a LF or 1B to have the highest VORP for a given year. Bonds has been first something like 6 times... Pujols and Howard were 1-2 last year...

I think I take Bonds from 2001-2004 over any other 4 year stretch by any player ever.
