Default I would drop the pledge of allegience and replace it with....

Either nothing or some sort of pledge to themselves. Every person in the US is a nation onto themselves. The most important person in the world is you, especially in the empathy-free, capitalistic paradise like the US.

The current pledge gives a piece of cloth great signifigence. If the government of the US becomes usurped by corporations, the pledge makes easily indoctrinated people (public school students) think these flag draped thieves are a holy 'under god' entity worthy of respect and deference.

I don't really care about the "under God" bit nearly so much as the whole thing is a pile of fascist crap.

Do they still do the pledge of allegience in schools? all public? all or some private too? Only certain grades like elementary?

I didn't even realize it until my late 30's but that was some massive indoctrination into nationalism of the USA, repreat it 2000 times with a roomful of others and you become so bound to it psychologically it is incredible.

They still did it at the high school I went to in the early 90s. I opted to not participate though.

America had no pledge of allegiance for most of it's history. People that do it in the name of tradition are braindead. Also, I resent that it has spread into nongovernmental institutions. When I go to Judo class, I have to bow to the flag.
