Default Dems try to bring the troops home

I've been hearing about how the Democratic leadership has gotten behind an outline of binding legislation to start bringing troops home. Under the plan proposed by Speaker Pelosi, all troops would withdraw from Iraq by Sept. 2008. (right before the election, hehe) The plan also requires an earlier withdrawl if benchmarks are not met.

This looks like the opening skirmish in the battle over Iraq. Bush has of course vowed to veto the legislation, but the Dems are planning to attach their provisions to the "emergency" war funding bills that in the past have breezed through Congress. I don't know what will happen if Bush vetos a funding bill and the Dems refuse to pass a clean bill. If anyone has any insight into what might happen without the appropriations or a few more details on the Democratic plan, I'd appreciate it.

Aren't there a lot of Democrats that are against this plan because it doesn't get the troops out soon enough?

This time, it sounds like they're going to point out these are HIS benchmarks and requirements he's vetoing - There's nothing in this bill GWB can object to without his hypocrisy being paraded around in waves - these are the requirements and benchmarks he insisted he was going to set for the Iraqi Government back in Nov/Dec.

meanwhile, the surge is requiring another 8000 troops over what was initially pitched and generals outside Baghdad are requesting reinforcements.

while American deaths have been minimized, Iraqi deaths have not, from everything I've been reading on iraqslogger. People claim the surge is working, but only for American Soldiers - it does not seem to be stablizing the situation in Iraq.

And once again, at the meeting in Iraq, our US diplomats accused Iran of arming Shitte miltias - and Iran gave them a FU right back. I guess things got a little heated at this great diplomatic meeting that was supposed to fix Iraq's political future.

it's going to be a fun spring - Democrats have over 60% of the population behind them, and they're edging their way to 60 votes in the Senate, and will probably get them - shortly thereafter, it should be a small jump to 66 - will make for some interesting Spring manuevering. GWB isn't immune to polls (as we saw by his dropping Rumsfield right after the Midterms) but he's being hit with scandal after scandal, and even the Justice Dept. is starting to look rotten to the core.

his ratings are near Nixon's pre-impeachment - he may have to let this one go and start bringing troops home.

Of course, another 9/11 and all bets are off - good thing we put all that money into our domestic security

There has been some bickering between Democrats about the plan, but I suspect there will be unanimous consent when the bill is finalized - After all, right now they have NOTHING in terms of a timetable.

Pelosi and company will build a consensus that has the Democrats and even a few Repub's voting for it, methinks. The moderates have been given some leeway in the past, but the neverending war needs to have a deadline set sometime, and this will probably have enough votes to end the filibuster threat.

Fully funding the withdrawal is a very good idea and plan.

I'm glad they are finally doing something. To be honest I thought they would just let the war drag on to help them in '08.

just crap he's been dodging for years all starting to unravel - LOL

So america goes into iraq, bombs the hell out of it, promises to bring democracy but instead turns iraq into the ultimate real life wild wild west, and now democrats want to pull the troops out just like that?? we don't owe it to bush, cheney, reps or dems to stabilize iraq, we owe it to the iraqi people and the children of iraq.

America made a mistake, america ruined a country, america ruined lives, and america should stay till it is fixed. Anything else is flippin the middle finger to iraqis

"sorry we ruined your country, but we gotta go you're on your own now, bye"

if u believe this u should enlist.
At best we removed a dictator and now the Iraqi's can figure [censored] out for themselves. Whatever happens happens...but all the boys and girls should either be redeployed to Afganistan etc or head home all together.

Iraq is never going to be fixed...it will always be a shithole.
