Default 14 left in a $55 6-max 54 person tourney, interesting hand

I'm second in chips with 14 left. I get moved to a new table with the chip leader (~2k ahead) on my left, and third place (~1k behind) on my right. The chip leader whom I had been watching had used his chips to push all in a number of times to take down pots. Knowing this, how does my line look here:

PokerStars Game #8871574115: Tournament #45046785, $50+$5 Hold'em No Limit - Level VII (100/200) - 2007/03/12 - 18:57:53 (ET)

Seat 3: maunders (10992 in chips)
Seat 4: ships&gigles (11265 in chips)
Seat 5: MonkeyBudg (13285 in chips)

MonkeyBudg: bets 1600
ships&gigles: raises 1600 to 3200
MonkeyBudg: raises 8800 to 12000
ships&gigles: calls 7240 and is all-in
*** TURN *** [Qh]
*** RIVER *** [3h]
*** SHOW DOWN ***

MonkeyBudg: shows [Js Qs] (a pair of Queens)
ships&gigles collected 22705 from pot
*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot 22705 | Rake 0
Board
Seat 1: action16 folded before Flop (didn't bet)
Seat 2: GazMag (button) folded before Flop (didn't bet)
Seat 3: maunders (small blind) folded before Flop
Seat 4: ships&gigles (big blind) showed [Ks Ac] and won (22705) with a pair of Kings
Seat 5: MonkeyBudg showed [Js Qs] and lost with a pair of Queens

He told me afterwards my play was disgraceful, but my intent was to trap him if I hit the flop by just calling his bet preflop.

Yeah, my raise was too small in retrospect. I don't know about shoving, but maybe ~4800 would have been better. However, I didn't feel he had much of a hand. My gut feeling was hes weak, i've got him beat now. I used a small raise because I had seen him overshove a couple times, and I wanted to bait him into doing that again.

i think ~4800 would be silly and make your hand relatively transparent given stacks. As you played to make him push a draw (if you really want him to) or crai so that he puts you on diamonds (obv) is better.

I dig it. As Cloutier says, "Columbus took a chance so why can't you?" Your read enabled you to trap an overly aggressive opponent for all his chips. Sure it could have backfired but it also made you the massive chipleader with a super shot at 1st. vnh
