Default What advice would you give to the poker novice playing in a mixed game

What advice would you give to the poker novice playing in a mixed game for the first time in their life. How should they prepare? Any good mixed game books?

Well, a true novice should be nowhere near a mixed game, but assuming a non pro playing their first mixed game, they would have to have at least a decent understanding of poker, say able to beat NL50 or Live 5/10 limit, etc.

assuming HORSE
H - Should know how to play
O8 - draw to nuts
R - bet when ahead, fold when behind
S - chasing is expensive!
E - ug, i find this game tricky, not sure

I may get flamed for this, but I would pound starting hands for each game.
Razz - if you dont play anything worse than 8 low starting, and just bet when ahead or check/fold, i really think you'll be ok in low limit mixed online games
Omaha - play all paint or A2, only drawing to nuts, again, cant get in that much trouble
stud - good starters, dont chase

You can avoid losing a lot of money by remembering exactly which game you're playing at the moment. Especially in those rounds where Razz, Stud and Eight or Better come in a row.

I've seen people lose big bucks (relatively speaking) by thinking they were getting the low half in a high-only game.

Keep careful track of what round it is. Don't play Razz starters in Stud Hi, or jam A2345 in a 2-7 game.

Play tight until you have a feel for each game. Because most players are not experts in all the games (unless you are playing at high stakes), its usually hard to lose too badly if you just play pretty tight - read the stud and omaha boards for more details if you don't know the basics.

Don't play unless you are comfortable playing at least some of the other games - the game I play, I've learnt Omaha as I've played, but I was already as good at the stud games as most of the regulars. It makes things much easier if you have some games where you feel in control when you are starting out.
