Default Cancer has been defeated (and cheaply, to boot!)

http://www.newscientist.com/article/...t-cancers.html

[ QUOTE ]
It sounds almost too good to be true: a cheap and simple drug that kills almost all cancers by switching off their “immortality”. The drug, dichloroacetate (DCA), has already been used for years to treat rare metabolic disorders and so is known to be relatively safe.

It also has no patent, meaning it could be manufactured for a fraction of the cost of newly developed drugs.

Evangelos Michelakis of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, and his colleagues tested DCA on human cells cultured outside the body and found that it killed lung, breast and brain cancer cells, but not healthy cells. Tumours in rats deliberately infected with human cancer also shrank drastically when they were fed DCA-laced water for several weeks.

DCA attacks a unique feature of cancer cells: the fact that they make their energy throughout the main body of the cell, rather than in distinct organelles called mitochondria. This process, called glycolysis, is inefficient and uses up vast amounts of sugar.

Friggin' Canadians.

Oh wait

I read this, and I kept looking for the joke, not expecting it to be real. Great find.

I don't get the joke. This paper was just published in a top-tier, peer-reviewed journal. This is exciting work, IMO.

I feel like there's an announcement for a 'cure' for cancer once a month on major news sites.

This drug hasn't been put through any clinical trials yet.

However, it does look like many new drugs coming out are showing some hope against some of the common chronic diseases humans have. (minus heart disease)

I was going to ask why you were sad, but then I realized that was just your handlebar mustache.

Yes, I am an Asian with a handlebar mustache.

That would be pretty awful, I guess.

Awesome. Some interesting info there. After losing a beloved grandfather to cancer I really hope progress continues with this.

On a side note, A friend of mine thinks that pizza is the cure for HIV. More on this story as it develops.
