Default Why does the last 30c of prepaid gas go slow?

I usually fill up but was running late for work this morning so I just put in a quick $10 in gas. It took about a minute to pump the first $9.70 and almost that long to pump the last 30c. Almost all gas pumps do this, but I can't think of any concievable reason why they do.

If it is because the last 30c are more acurate, then what about the other 9.70?

If it needs to slowdown instead of just stopping, why not slow down for the last 2c?

If this in anyway makes it more accurate, then what about when you don't prepay? Is it less accurate?

from the department of weights and measures:

Q: I prepaid for gasoline and the pump went really slow when it got close to the total dollar amount. Did I get shorted on the amount of gasoline I paid for?
A: The dispenser is designed to slow down when nearing its preset sale amount.

[/ QUOTE ]

That doesn't help alot.

I personally think it is probably something that just makes customers think they got every cent they paid for, and serves no real purpose except for waisting time.

Does anyone else know or have any ideas why this happens?

They would hate for you to under pay them and go over but yes I agree its stupid and a waste of time since it could prolly slow down closer to 5 cents or 10 cents from your buying point.

My first thought is maybe it's easier on the pump. It can't be good for the pump to be open full bore and then slammed shut. I know it happens when people don't prepay, but maybe it's the station's way of helping the longevity of the pump.

I'm so glad a new post was made to discuss a trivial question which the OP actually already found an answer to

Once, when I was driving home from Chicago, I stopped at a gas station that literally slowed down to a cent per second for the last 2 dollars. And it was butt cold outside.
