In C:\Program Files\Absolute Poker\data name whatever background you want to use as 'bg6.dat' for 6 max or 'bg9.dat' for full ring. Just say yes to the file changing warning and it should work fine. Gets around the problem of skins not working with 6max.

err, sorry looks like they changed it up. Their skinning really sucks imo and it's easier just to mod AP the same as other sites.

I'd recommend just finding a table image you like at HoldemReview or something and just renaming it to bg9.dat or bg6.dat. That's really the easiest way.

Actually, just check out This thread

Previously, all their skins worked on both 9-handed and 6-handed tables. Since an update a couple months ago, you now need to get skins specific to the number of seats at the table. Currently there are very few 6-max skins.

To apply the skin, I just open the file (Absolute Poker is set as the application to open the skin files in Windows), then it asks you if you want to apply the skin. But, if you download a 9-handed skin and you're at a 6-handed table, the skin will not work.
