Default Simple question: Pushups

I hate going to the gym, so im wondering if it is possible to develop the upper body with pushups to the point one can have a manly chest or decent at least just by daily pushup routine, or is my only choice going to the gym and doing bench presses or buying a home gym?

I was friends with a bunch of gymnasts in high school, and they seemed to get pretty damn jacked, and they never lifted weights. Just lots of pushups, dips, pullups, and other excercises that only used their body weight.

The simple answer is yes. However, you will need to do a lot of push ups each day. Herschel Walker only did push ups and he played in the NFL and was quite impressive. He did weighted push ups, incline and declines, and lots of other variations. You also have to switch between wide base, shoulder width and diamond push ups to get a well rounded chest.

Your best bet it to really buy a home gym if you dont want to go to one. Also, weights will allow you to develop a more well rounded physique. Your chest is not the only part of your upper body, you need to work shoulders, traps and arms to get the desired look.

Yup you can get pretty decently sized from pushups, I used to do it. You should mix in some other forms besides the standard ones though, like do some with your hands by your waist to develop your shoulder muscles as opposed to arms and pecs. There are other things you can do as well, like dips on the corner of a kitchen counter and handstand pushups if you can learn to do them, as well as pull ups on a door if you dont want to go buy a pull up bar.

Look for more information by him on the net about bodyweight conditioning, it's pretty impressive.

I used to do this and was ripped. When it starts to get easy you do declines, weighted pushes, one arms, claps, knuckles, etc. You can do inverted (against a wall) pushups for shoulders.

ps. it's much easier to get big fast with weights of course.

pps. the only chest workout girls should do is pushups IMHO

I do push ups every morning when I wake up. My wife puts cinder blocks on my back so that it is more difficult.
