This has nothing to do with safety in numbers. Its stupid because there is a very very good chance he was going to get killed in front of his two daughters for a stranger, and not even save the stranger in the process.

He basically turned the situation from one guaranteed death of a stranger to a situation where it was death for both, death for either one, or death for none. As they talked about, with 1 inch of clearance (which he would have never known ahead of time, he could have been no clearance), death for none was probably the least likely situation. Basically in poker terms, this was a massively -EV situation. He runner runnered the royal flush to beat quads.
