Default Who would have thought metal kite strings are dangerous?

At least 11 dead at Pakistani Kite Festival

[ QUOTE ]
(AP) At least 11 people died and more than 100 people were injured at an annual spring festival in eastern Pakistan celebrated with the flying of thousands of colorful kites, officials said Monday.
The deaths and injuries were caused by stray bullets, sharpened kite-strings, electrocution and people falling off rooftops on Sunday at the conclusion of the two-day Basant festival, said Ruqia Bano, spokeswoman for the emergency services in the city of Lahore.

They glue broken glass to the kite string to give it a cutting edge. Or so "The Kite Runner" says.

when I read that book I would always get so annoyed at the kite flying parts. It seemed all it talked about was cutting your hands on the line... did the idea of wearing gloves cross their mind?

This is done in the US as well. When I was a kid, there was an annual kite festival in Newport, RI and this was one of the events. I imagine it's done in a much more first-world way.

Last i checked, the US is the only nation with nukes who has come up with plans to develop new nukes.

And at no point has Pakistan mentioned using nukes as a preemptive measure.
