What\'s the best approach for a room during March Madness (3/16-3/19)?
Hitting Vegas with 5 guys. Anyone with experience have advice to offer on a good room rate at a decent hotel for a group of five?
Two of us will be in the poker room the majority of the time and the others are in it for the basketball. So both sports betting and poker need to be near by. I'm sure all 4 out of 5 of us could meet an 8 hour a day table requirement if it meant a good price on the room. Checked Orbitz and was quoted $550 per head (flight and hotel) the MGM. Flight alone was quoted at $300. So we're looking at $50-$60 per person per night. I'm not sure what size room the quote is for. Preferably we'd all have beds so it might mean two rooms and a cot. Are we better off booking a package through a site like Orbitz or doing only the flight and arranging the room directly through the hotel? Also, advice on card rooms would be appreciated. Looking for a 2/4L, 3/6L or 1/2NL game with no smoking, short waits, fast dealers, and loose games.

Book the room using Travelaxe. Its such a great resource, searches all available hotel rooms and rates from many sources to tell you whats the best options. www.travelaxe.com.

If I book through a website like TravelAxe, Orbitz, or Kayak.com will we still be eligible for the room discount for playing poker?

No. You might try to use travelaxe or the other websites to give you an idea on price, then go straight to the hotel's website and book there. Often you can get just as good a price. But, to book at the poker rate, you need to call the poker room directly--although as crazy as that weekend, i don't know how easy it is to get a poker rate (it might not make a difference, I've never done it).

My advice (I've been there for that weekend past 12 years, can't wait [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]):
Book early & often. Not sure where you're flying from, but $550/person including air only 2 months prior doesn't sound bad. Don't think you'd be able to get poker rate if booking through Orbitz or Travelocity. Even if you could, don't think you could beat those room rates at MGM with the poker rate. Bonus advice: The guys watching hoops need to arrive early to grab a spot to watch the games. The books fill up and it's hard for a group to sit together. And standing from 9:15am tip to 9:30pm kind of sucks. MGM's book has limited seating--if your boys lay down big cash you might be able to reserve VIP seating. Might not be the best spot to watch games. Many casinos have special rooms setup to show games and even for a fee, might be worth it IMO. Again, beats standing/leaning for 12 hours. 10 weeks and counting!!!!!!

Easy walks to anywhere from Mandalay to the Venetian. Sure, the room's awful; but how many interior decorators are you bringing? [img]/images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img]

We've stayed at the Imperial Palace (the IP), they usually open the Ballroom for watching games, close to Ceasers, the Venitian, Bellagio. Monorail to Sahara for tournies, etc...
If you get a room there you can sign up for the IP's customer card, and then log in when you play there. While you won't get a "Poker Room" rate you will get comp dollars for playing there that can be applied to your bill. Generally we got about 1.00/hour played. took about 10-15 bucks off of our final bill. Even though the IP is owned by Harrahs, they are not on the "Total Rewards" program, they have their own card so their own comps. Good cookies in the poker room too [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] Elevators are the slowest in Vegas, find the secret elevators near the Monorail station, it will be worth the extra walking.

Me and about 10 buddies were there in 2005 for march madness, stayed at aladdin which was about all we could find for an acceptable rate.
What I can tell you in great detail is what a freakin goldmine all poker rooms are during this time! All of the drunken idiots who have seen WSOP on espn sit down and donk it up, it's beautiful. After 7+ hours of drunken blackjack, I sit in the $2/5 NL ($300 cap) there and end up leaving 3 hours later with $1600. It was especially entertaining having everybody play back at me and not buy my crazy raises because I was so drunk [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]
