Default 401k q I can\'t find the answer to

my employer has their 401k plan set up through ING. ING retirement seems to have a bad web interface, limited choice of funds and very few reporting features. also I'd rather have all my investment dollars in one place.

what I want to know is can I somehow roll the money from my ING account over to my vanguard account without closing out my 401k or anything like that? our HR dept doesn't know if I can do this and ING hasn't given me a straight answer.

Probably no. Generally you can only take money out of a 401(k) if you leave the company or if the plan terminates.
