This computer was built by a friend of mine, and he ripped me off big time by lying about the graphics card he put in, so I ended up never actually paying him for it (lol.) However, this computer has been randomly shutting itself off ever since I bought it from him. The power just goes, and that's the end of it. Seems to happen completely randomly. It's been happening for years and I've never noticed a pattern. It only does it while it's being used by someone, though.
Any ideas, anyone? |

It sounds like one of two things. The most likely is one is that your power supply is insufficient for the energy needs of your computer. The next most likely thing is your motherboard is shorting out somewhere against your case. Try asking your friend if he remembers what power supply he put in your computer. Since he skimped on the video card he probably skimped on the power supply too. Try this page to estimate your power needs. Once you get that I recommend going with a name brand unit (Antec, Enermax, Thermaltake, etc.) and at the bare minimum 50W over their recommended minimum. If you choose to go with the bare minimum and a non-name brand unit you'll definitely run into the same problems

I've stopped trying to figure out how much power I need and just go for the 620W ones. I know it will be reliable and consistent, and will handle everything I throw at it for a non-gaming machine.
I second Antec & Enermax. Cheap powersupply and cheap RAM can be huge sources of small annoying problems like this. |
