Default Shin Splints

Can anyone who has ever had a shin splint tell me about them.

What are some shin excercises I can do so it won't happen again?

Bicycle more.

Put a 10-25lbs weight on your toes and lift your foot up.

There's really no remedy except rest. Maybe get an insole for your running shoes. Also, try to run on softer surfaces such as dirt or grass.

in order to prevent shin splints, make sure you don't over stride when you are running. if you do, it causes you it causes a quick over-extension of what ever the hell muscles are in your shin.

Thanks guys.

I was already biking for a few weeks.

About that toe thing... I can barley even get my toes off the ground. It feels like my muscle just can't lift my toes up. I think I need to stretch those muscles somehow. Do you know a way? There is no way I can put weight on them right now. I can lift my heels up very easily. Will those excersises do anything?

I will switch from hard dirt to grass.

I just got a new pair of running shoes. Should I still get an insole? They feel like they absorb shock pretty good.

Shin raises worked well for me, and also buying a new pair of shoes. Go somewhere where the sales guy knows what he is talking about and have him fit you for shoes that fit the way you walk/run In addition, make sure you are giving your body some rest time in between workouts. I started running everyday and this absolutely killed my shins at first.

LD,

Obviously rest and do the exercise when you can.

Plyometrics may help as well. I've not heard anything factual about this, but it does to a good bit to help strengthen your ankle muscles and may have some carryover to your shin.

Lay a towel flat on the floor and try to scrunch it up using your toes. Worked for me.
