How to spend a loan
So I have the chance to take out a 25k loan that I don't have to start making payments on until roughly September of 2007 (~10months) and then has only 2%APR. (This is a one time military loan for new officers)
I've decided it must be +EV to take this loan out and do something with it... the question is what. I don't have any debt I need to consolidate or anything like that, I'm just curious what the best investment strategy would be to make money off this loan. I don't have any experience with investing of any kind, but have decided that it would be a nice thing to learn about. What would you guys do? |

Re: How to spend a loan
Start with an online savings account, E-loan, ING, Emigrant (there was a thread on this before)...and let it gain some interest while you are learning.
That is a start. |

Re: How to spend a loan
I would be very conservative with it...the easiest thing to go with would be an FDIC insured savings/ money market account. Many in this forum use Emigrant Direct , however E Loan has just announced the most competitive rate. You can get more details and compare rates very easily here

Re: How to spend a loan
It depends. CDs will probably offer slightly better rates than savings accounts.

Re: How to spend a loan
Dont leave it in a savings account, taxes will bring you back to where you started. I'd put it in high yield muni mutual fund. Get 6-8% relatively tax free.
