i switched monitors and my video card stopped working

i just bought a new monitor. i have had 2 monitors set up for a long time. i don't need 3 so i just switched my old monitor and plugged in my new one. i didn't touch anything else. well, my computer no longer detects my 2nd monitor. any ideas?
