how do i do it?

i see stuff like "i get 3:1 for my money" and i have no idea how to figure out those numbers.

i know how to do pot odds, perhaps that is involved somehow?

I'm wondering how well you really understand pot odds if the bit you quote is strange to you. In order to use pot odds, you have to know what your money odds are, so you compare the size of the pot to the amount you need to call to continue.

So, there's $200 in the pot at the beginning of a betting round. Your opponent bets $100. You are now looking at a $300 pot and you must call $100 to continue. The money odds are 300:100 or 3:1.

Then, of course, you have to compute the odds against making your hand and compare those card odds to your money odds to determine whether a call is correct.

There are other factors, like effective and implied odds as well.

I suggest "Getting Started in Holdem", "Small Stakes Holdem", "Theory of Poker" or any of the good, basic, standard texts- or a thorough seach of previous posts on here. Have you checked the Beginners FAQs / Links?

One of the better beginner explanations of odds that I've seen is in the book "Thursday Night Poker."

Do a google search for pot odds, implied odds, etc... There are a lot of good articles available that will help you understand this better...

Also, read the books listed above...
