Star Trek on DVD, Why So Expensive?
Last year, I bought my wife The Next Generation on DVD, which was about $85/ season. I went to look at Voyager yesterday, and it's over $100/ season! WTF? Anybody have any idea why these would be so much more expensive than other TV shows? Hell, not even the Sopranos is that expensive.

Because Trekkies will pay it? [/ QUOTE ] Yes, but surely there is a much bigger market of people who casually enjoyed the Star Treks, and would be willing to pay around half that for the show. I'm sure there would have been a ton of Friends fanatics who would have paid well over $100/ season, but that doesn't make it the optimal price. |

Re: Star Trek on DVD, Why So Expensive?
Dude,
They are trying to maximize profits, not sales. I'm sure the price will drop once they clear out all of the suckers who will pay $100/season (if it won't hurt profits in their other properties and they aren't stupid). Edit - to your optimal price thing, you are trying to maximize the function of: Profit = Revenue - Expenses (simplified, there are lots of PIA details that I am rolling up in expenses). It is not even trivial to maximize just Revenue = sales * price, and maximizing revenue != maximizing profit in most cases. |

Re: Star Trek on DVD, Why So Expensive?
Also, aren't there like a bagillion episodes on one season?
With the "friends" example - you might know somebody liked the show and buy them the season as a gift. But I would never buy someone Star Trek if i didn't know they loved that show. It also might have to do with when it actually came out. Plus isn't it in a cool box? |
