Default bill to regulate online gambling being considered for early next year

Nevada Congressman Jon Porter introduced a bill in May that would study whether online gambling sites, run by U.S. companies, could be effectively regulated. Fahrenkopf believes that bill is likely to be considered early next year. The measure is backed by the casinos and still gathering support. "It is still Congressman Porter's intention to move ahead with this bill," says Trevor Kolego, the congressman's legislative director. "We hope to pass it, if not by the end of this session, then next session."

If I remember correctly this bill was to study the above for 18mos. and then come back with a recommendation. No immediate help.

It is still an effort that should be pursued. Honestly, I think passage of this study bill is more likely to occur before serious consideration of full regulation.

On preview : I agree with what Berge said

AFAIK this bill is currently in the judiciary commitee and although it is not immediate help is there anything else?

I mean the PPA can talk about a poker carve out until doomsday but without legislation it means nothing. It feels like we are all sitting around hoping that someone takes care of this for us. Wouldn't it make some sort of sense to pressure members of the judiciary commitee to pass the study bill?

"We are possibly considering a chance to look at, maybe, the effects of the outcomes while thinking about how we (or they) might be affected by said decisions which we may or may not make, perhaps."

This is Congress speak for nothing will be done until someone gets enough PAC money in our pockets to get something done. Is regulating and taxing a good idea? Of course. No one needs a commission to know that. Good ideas hold no weight in Congress. Pay the nice man (horse racing, lottories) and your in. Dont and youre not.
