Default Reporters are dumb

http://www.wltx.com/news/story.aspx?storyid=41208

“It's like, wait a minute, why are you putting nitrogen in these tires?” is a reaction James says he often gets from customers. “Then we give them the benefits of why."

He says they've offered nitrogen tire fillings for two years, but he believes people are still largely unaware of the new service. But customer Doug Roberts is on board, and says he might never go back.

“You don't have to check the air pressure as much,” said Doug. “It's real good, because most people don't check anyway."

James says that's where nitrogen is an improvement over oxygen. It's a thicker compound, meaning it stays inflated longer and deflates slower if punctured by something.

“All tires are porous, they're going to leak,” said James Roberts. “It's gonna take at least six months for it to leak down (with nitrogen fillings).”

And ultimately, that can help save gas.

“You're actually gonna save about, in a years time, seven percent."

It's right about the time James Roberts tells his customers that, when they tell him to fill it up with the non-oxygen stuff.

Roberts says his company is the only one in the Midlands that currently offers nitrogen tire fillings. They charge about $5 for the service.

well, if it costs 50 cents at your gas station to fill your tire, yet to fill it with nitrogen costs 5$....and it deflates 6 months slower than oxygen...how are you really saving 7% over 12 month's time?

I have no idea. Is that what I'm supposed to think makes the reporter dumb? Knowing wacki, I'm guessing it's something far more esoteric than that so that he can show off his knowledge of the periodic table and his ability to google things.

But the article was talking about how this somehow saves gas, not on saving money filling your tires with air. I read this as save 7% on gas over twelve months.

nice google comment.

Evan, what is the #1 component of air?

And since you bring up the periodic table, yes nitrogen has the atomic number 7 and oxygen has an atomic number of 8. Holy crap this thread makes me sad.

Apparently a lot of OOTers are dumb too.

Hint: This is a scam and the reporter fell for it.
