Default A 2-7 TD Move

say you draw 2 out of position on the second draw and your opponent draws 1 or stands pat. Now you make a T high and you suspect that he has a weak 8 or a 9. A move I've seen people make is check raising before the 3rd draw and standing pat trying to get your opponent to break his 9 or bad 8. Its easier to beat him if he breaks then to try and draw to an 8 or better yourself.

My question is, what type of situation makes this a good play? an opponent who stands pat after you draw two? is it better after you draw 1? does a 3rd player in the pot make it better or worse etc?

it seems to me that in general its a bad play. if you have a T High and draw you will make an 8 or better about 25% of the time. It costs you 1bb and there are usually 5 bbs in the pot at the time. so you lose 1bb 75% (-.75bbs) and make 5bb 25%(+1.25bbs) for a net of +.5bb

if you check raise you lose 2BB when he calls and stands pat behind you because a T high can't win in that situation and the ch raise cost you 2bbs. You win 6 bb about 50% of the time he draws (for +3bb) and lose 2bb the other 50% (-1bb) where he improves which nets you 2 bb when he draws.

so if you can get him to break 1/2 the time then you break even. win 2bb 50% and lose 2bb the other half. This is worse than the .5bbs you make by drawing.

so you have to believe he'll break more than 50%. Now with a 9 he may just do that but he could already have a 7 or an 8. It just seems like this wont work often enough.

Do you guys make this play and what conditions do you look for when making it?

Thanks

Its more profitable to break the T than it is to get into a betting war, all you are really doing is pricing yourself and your opponent in by bloating the pot. Its a play with great variance, it doesn't pay off in the long run.

On the bright side we love the opponents who pull this crap all the time! It makes for bigger pots, he is essentially donating to you.
