Default Internet in Australia...same as US?

I leave soon for Australia and want to know whether they use similar hardware for internet access over there? E.g. should I bring along my cable modem? Will I be able to use it over there just like I use it here?
Do they use the same types of wires, cables, etc?

Yes, but their Internet flushes clockwise.

Internet is generally similar in every part of the world, in my experience. Having a wireless card would be nice too.

Our internet generally uses tin can's and string.

But on a serious note, all should be fine except the different power voltage and plugs. Our voltage is 240, the USA is on 120. Check if the modem can handle 240. If your using a desktop computer in Australia, there should be a switch on the back that changes from 120 to 240. If you don't flick the switch before plugging in for the first time then there will be a bright flash and a puff of smoke. New powersupply will then be needed.

Cable internet isn't as common as ADSL here, but it is possible to get, dependant on location. Less people have cable tv too.

Feel free to Pm me any Oz questions.

Granite

Broadband in Australia is one of the worst for a modern nation.

You will have to deal with download caps, and very slow speeds (even compared to the US).

Have fun, I hear Australia is an awesome country!

Over there the internet is not something that you just dump something on. It's not a big truck. It's a series of tubes.
