Check raising illegal?
I'm in michigan and the local horse track hosts poker games for "charity". There are cash games, tournaments, and sngs. I'm not sure if the no check raising rule applies to the tournaments and sngs, but in the cash games it's supposedly not allowed by the state of Michigan to check raise. Can someone explain this to me?

Re: Check raising illegal?
Sounds like a Michigan legislator was playing poker, got checkraised, and didn't like it.
You might get a better answer in the B&M forum. |

Look up the law at the state, I'm sure they have a list of rules for chartiy tournemnts. The organizers may have mixedup the rules. Outlawing checkraising is a joke and somebody is mixed up. Take the time to look into it.

Re: Check raising illegal?
I wonder what the penalty is for check raising. Couple of years in prison? Is this just a misdemeanor?

Re: Check raising illegal?
It's a stupid rule. Check-raising basically reduces positional advantage. So, if you play in such a game, tighten up early and steal with impunity on the button. It seems a lot of geriatric poker players think check-rasing is unethical. They seem to think you should play in a manner that makes it immaterial whether your cards are face-up or face-down. Aparently at some point there were enough of these idiots in the Michigan legislature to get this written into law. If you're expecting sense or logic in legislation, you have a lot to learn.

Re: Check raising illegal?
It used to be illegal to checkraise in the State of Washington about 20 years ago.

Once when I was in law school, a couple of the chess pros at the coffeehouse where I used to play chess - instead of going to class - called the police over an "illegal" chess move. It was a money game, of course. True story.

[/ QUOTE ] Probably the check-raiser wouldn't get in any trouble, but the cardroom that allowed it could catch some heat. At least that's how it works in Washington state where a lot of the betting structure is state-enforced. |
