Doonesbury appreciation
I am a big Doonesbury fan, and always amazed at how many people never read it (particularly since it's freely available on the web nowadays).
In my opinion, there is no strip remotely like it. Trudeau does a variety of things uniquely well: First, he always manages to remain topical. Second, he has perfect pitch in capturing the speech patterns of an extremely wide range of people and classes. Third, he is almost always funny, yet without resorting to "gags." And fourth, when he chooses not to be funny, he embues his characters with an uncommon sweetness and humanity that makes them seem actually real. Even the targets of his humor tend to be sympathetic. I encourage anyone unfamiliar with Doonesbury to start reading it. |
