DVD-ROM/CD ROM Drive died... Help Needed....
My DVD-Rom/CD Drive doesnt work anymore. I have gone to My COmputer->Hardware->Devices->Drives-> It says that it is working properly, but to trouble shoot if you have a problem.
I have trouble shooted and all of my drivers were updated and in order, but my drive is still dead. (The computer is a New Dell I bought in Dec.) Is it safe to assume that I need to buy a new DVD-ROM/CD-ROM drive? If so, is it easy enough to install myself? I dont want anyone else to touch my computer because it would require me deleting a ton of personal information, etc. |

If you took it into a shop it would take the repair guy all of five minutes to replace the drive. You could explain your concerns and just stand there and watch him do it to make sure your personal information is not compromised.

Re: DVD-ROM/CD ROM Drive died... Help Needed....
First thing to do when a device stop funtioning is to open up the computer and check so all cables are propely connected. It probably doesnt hurt to try to remove as much dust as possible at the same time. Computers have a tendency to accumulate a lot of dust.
If it still refuses to work, it is very easy to replace a drive and a new one should be cheap. |

Re: DVD-ROM/CD ROM Drive died... Help Needed....
A guy I know had some trouble with a Dell hard drive on his new PC. Basically as it was still under warranty they gave him the option of sending the PC in to have the work done, but the preferred way was to ship him the part and have him deal with it.
If your PC is still under warranty, you might be able to get them to ship you a new drive and then the ever-helpful CSRs can talk you through switching the drives over the phone. Then you get to ship the old drive back or they get mad. |

If its a desktop you will have to plug in two cables, easiest thing ever. If its a laptop I have no clue.

a good DVD Burner is like $60 nowadays, a dvd rom will be even cheaper. They're very simple to install, just open up the computer, disconnect the two cables from the back of it(one is the ide and the other is a molex if you are wondering) screw your new drive in, connect the two cables, and you're done, very simple.
