What makes rap good?
People here (and most people in general) always consider a few rappers to be in the elite: Tupac, Eminem, Biggie, Jay-Z, Nas, Rakim, Talib Kweli etc etc etc...
My question is what makes these guys good? What sets them apart from lousy rap? Obviously lyrical prowess and cleverness is a factor, but what else? Clearly, speed isn't a factor when you look at guys like HOVA or BIG. I know people talk about the "flow" a lot, but I'm not sure what constitutes "good flow." I kind of have my own idea of what makes rap good but I'd like to hear from OOT on this topic. |

Re: What makes rap good?
Most hippityhop albums are very patchwork. Just like the rockety-roll, you get couple of good songs if you're lucky and a lot of filler (Like the unstoppable crappy skits).
What are the components of a rap song: The background: beat, instrumentals, samples The foreground: lyrics, voice, delivery The foreground is "flow", but really flow is voice and how you use it and whether you (the listener) like it. I could listen to Pharoahe Monch rap the phone book. I can't listen to more than one Atmosphere song without wanting to defecate. |

Re: What makes rap good?
I tend to favor guys that not only rhyme but create parralel phrases or multi-syllable rhymes (I'm sure there's a term for this in rap but I don't know what it is) but still maintain a lot of narrative flow and natural sentence structure. From a technical perspective this seems really difficult to me. So a lot of my favorite stuff is early Nas, Biggie, Boots Riley of the Coup, etc.
I also like political content but I think it needs to be mixed in to something a bit more broad. Solely political art is propaganda. You need to throw in a storytelling element, some humor, or something to break it up. I can get into some of the 'art-rap' or underground stuff but to me there's a big difference between being edgy and weird and just being unable to stay on the beat. You need to master the fundamentals before you start breaking the rules, just like anything else. NT |
