Default Thinking of buying an apartment in NYC - any advice??

Know it can be a nightmare and everything is incredibly expensive but think I might be willing to take the plunge.

Upcoming thread in a nutshell:

Evan: I go to NYU. Perhaps you can live in a dorm with me. OMG LOST.

JBB: If you come to live here, call me cuz we can fly by Barcade and then watch 8th and Ocean together.

El Diablo: FWIW, you have no chance. Only wealthy Indian men with thick members can gain access to the city. Check out Nobu, though.

turnipmonster: You can live in Grimaldi's.

The DaveR: I'm Asian and I work in Bryant Park. I will probably see you and move to the other side of the street.

P.S.: Aiya.

hmnnn...interesting....

Ok I'm gonna hijack my own thread now - is Barcade any good?? Have heard it's a great time, etc. (and that there are apparently lots of girls there, which I have a hard time believing as it's basically a videogame bar). Sick of the same old places, but it's hard to get people out of Manhattan to Williamsburg....

my experience was not too bad, just don't expect to close when the seller says (closing was 4 months after the seller initially scheduled), and make sure you know what you're getting into.

Thx - so I guess it was an older place that took awhile for existing tenants to leave. I guess I'm worried about all the extra stuff that goes into the process like closing costs, maintenance and tax abatements, etc. You can get really screwed with those from what I hear. Right now I'm looking at a lot of new stuff that's either way downtown or in Williamsburg which gives you the best deals but obviously sucks for someone commuting to Midtown.

Geez - still no color on Barcade....
