I get berated by a table coach at Commerce
So I'm at the ol' Commerce playing some $20/$40 limit Texas Hold'em.
I get 99 and open in the CO. Some guy calls from the BB. He has a white hat on -- not a cowboy hat, I don't know what it is. It has a wide brim with like a red/navy stripe over the base. He also has very very dark sunglasses on; he's about 50 years old and has a grey goatee neatly trimmed. My read is that he sucks. The board by the end of the hand is AQJ97 (The 9 came on the flop) with four hearts (the flop was monotone). Some lady not in the hand freaks out because there are four hearts on the board and she folded one. The river action goes BB check, I bet, BB calls. "I don't have a heart, but I have three nines," I say, and quickly turn over my hand. He looks at my hand, looks at his briefly, nods, then mucks. As I'm stacking the chips, he looks over at me. BB: Why did you tell me what you don't have? Me: Excuse me? BB: Why did you say the hand you don't have, instead of what you do have? Me: Oh. Well I did say the hand I had right after saying I don't have a flush. BB: There are a lot of hands you don't have. Why mention the flush? Me: The lady over there mentioned it, sir, I was just iterating that a heart wasn't what I held; I held three nines. I turned it over immediately. BB: I know. But you didn't have two deuces. You didn't have Ace-King. Why didn't you say that? Me: Sir, I wasn't slow-rolling you. The table was talking about the obvious flush, I didn't have a flush, so I pointed to my three nines and announced my hand. BB: I'm not saying you slow-rolled me. But you made me think I might have a winner. Me: OK. Sorry if I offended you. BB: You didn't offend me, I'm just saying next time why don't you just say what you have instead of what you don't have? If you didn't have a flush, why did you bet? Me: Um, because I had three nines and you checked the river? BB: So why were you afraid I had the flush? Me: I don't know. Whatever. BB: Look, son, 99% of the time you bet that hand without a heart, you're gonna lose. Me: OK. Sorry. BB: I had a pretty good hand, you know. Me: So did I. BB: You got lucky that I called that bet without a flush. Me: OK. BB: I'm not bothered, son, I'm just saying it's something for you to think about. Something to think about next time you want to announce what you don't have. I didn't say a word the rest of the time I was at that table (I'd learned my lesson from my elder). An orbit later, he opened and I defended in the BB with some decent suited connector like 98s. Flop was 9xx, I check-raised, he folded right away. I said nothing. He said nothing. And that's the way I like it. |

Hilarious. Your posts always make me laugh b/c they truly embody what it's like to spend a large portion of your life in public cardrooms. Please write a book - I will buy it.

"BB: You didn't offend me, I'm just saying next time why don't you just say what you have instead of what you don't have? If you didn't have a flush, why did you bet?"
ask him why he called "BB: I had a pretty good hand, you know." respond: "could it beat three 9s? no? then shove it" "BB: You got lucky that I called that bet without a flush." respond "i got lucky with your wife last night" steam him and take more. |
