Potential mugging situation

Here's one for you internet tough guys.

Last night I was exiting the subway with my girlfriend around midnight. There isn't really anyone walking behind us on the platform or out of the train but when we start walking down the hall out of the station (there's a hallway, ~50 yards down to the street) I notice someone directly behind me.

We were having an animated conversation so if this guy was up to no good he would probably think we aren't paying attention. Unfortunately for him I have my ninja survival skillz in the mix.

As we leave the station onto the street he has gotten much closer to us and is following our path directly. He started out probably 20 yards behind us and is now more like 15 feet. I took an odd route across the street to the other side, kinda bearing the wrong way before doubling back on the sidewalk, and he followed us.

You're on a dark street, there are one or two other people walking the other direction. Still within shouting or even loud talking distance. You're about two blocks from a well-lit and safe area. Your lady friend has not noticed this guy behind you, and you don't think he's aware that you've noticed his sketchy behavior either.

How do you react? If it matters the guy is a good bit smaller than you are but you don't know if he is armed.

I'm a decent sized mfer, but I run as far as the safe area. I only have to outrun the chick, right?

wow. honestly if this were me (and i noticed him) id yell real loud, "HEY MAN BACK OFF." and run to the safe lit area.

this way if he were planning something he'd have to run to catch us and either way will make a big comotion.

personally, i wouldn't have noticed this b/c i dont have ninja survival skillz, so ida just got mugged.

situations like this suck, theres no telling how desperate a person really is. And therse no telling how irrational they are either.

It seems most of the time you are lucky though and you are just overreacting and nothing comes of the suspicious character.

one other piece of info: you can go either direction on the street you are on and reach a well-lit area in approximately the same distance

Best play here is probably to just start flipping out on your gf and explain why later. Grab her by the shoulders and give her a few shakes while screaming "I'm gonna [censored] kill you, bitch!" or something similar. In all liklihood, the mugger will just move along after witnessing this.
