Just got "Cell" from the library (library? wtf is that?) and read it in a day.
Rather than being his version of a cyber-punk novel (he mentions Gibson etc.)this seems more like a reactionary novel about things that are bugging him: cell phones, SUVs, Bush, Celtics fans . The writing was merely OK with no new stylistic leaps or experiements. The "zombies" weren't scary or even original, but rather identical to the ones in "28 Days Later." The only thing unique about this (for King) was the inclusion of a gay hero...though you could make that argument about "Shawshank Redemption" ...heh heh heh. Overall, I was left with a 'so what' feeling. King tackles conformity gone amuck. Yawn. Anyone else taken half an hour out of their schedule to read this? |

What do you think was his last really good work?
I'd say green mile. Bag of Bones was okay, but Green Mile was the last book he did that moved me. |

Bag of Bones and Green Mile were pretty good, Bag of Bones was a little bloated though. Hearts in Atlantis and Dreamcatcher have good bits too, but he gets to the point where his manipulation of the reader is obvious and distracting. I guess I'd say his last truly great novel was The Dark Half.

[/ QUOTE ] From his website, The Regulators, Desperation, and The Green Mile (in serial form) were all published in 1996. I really enjoyed The Dark Tower IV: Wizard & Glass (1997) and Hearts in Atlantis (2001), both done after those novels. I'm also a sucker for his short stories, so I liked Everything's Eventual in 2002. |
