there is no other raise you can make that is going to protect your hand for the flop and turn.

Post flop fair enough - personally i would raise a little more pre flop to limit the field. With a limper already in plus the antes all the callers are getting 2 to 1 or better to call.
I think i go straight to 1000 and hope for 1 caller - I guess it's all about risk/reward ratio though.

he'd make this play w/ random 2-3 gapper suited to nonsuited cards, utg+1.

Yeah this is standard. Raising a bit more PF, e.g. to 850, would be better...but probably wouldn't make too much if a difference. This kind of situation happens every once in a while, [censored] happens.
