Night play vs Day play
I play at local rooms about 1-3 times a week. I'd say that I have a bit more time in playing during the day hours like from 11-2 than night time play. I know that a lot more and lot worse players in general come out to play poker at night but I always have my best and most winning sessions during the day when I play. Anyone else have this as well? I feel more awake and alert for sure. It gets to be around 10 or 11 pm and I start to get tired and lose my focus. This usually spells a losing session for me when this starts. I know that there are usually a bit better players out in the daytime hours but I just like playing more during the day for shorter sessions.
Feeling old right now |

Re: Night play vs Day play
whenever i play during the day (10am-3pm) half my table is still on the same session from the night before. the other half are the old nits who havent busted yet from their 6am start. i prefer to play at night though, due to the increased action from players.

Re: Night play vs Day play
I can only play during the afternoon (2-5 pm) when my daughters taking her nap. I was afraid I wouldn't get much action but surprisingly it's been pretty good.

Re: Night play vs Day play
I also tend to have more winning sessions during the day (Sat & Sun 10am - 1pm). They are usually short handed and loose passive. The also tend to have dealers playing to fill up the table.
The LAGs from the night before show up around 1 or 2pm and the game changes. |

Re: Night play vs Day play
Once upon a time only certain types of players could play in the daytime. Pros and people who didn't have to be at work for the most part. That limited the playing population. Cell phones (did I say cell phones?) have enabled more people to play in the daytime and the games have gotten better. Night gets you the people who have had to physically be at their jobs and late night gets you the drunks which is even better. Night game>>>>day game but day game isn't nearly as bad as it used to be.

Re: Night play vs Day play
Good point. I see a lot of players that are there for their lunch hour or do have phones and ar conducting some business when they play. I just have way more wins in the day versus night play. The place I usually play at has plenty of tables(LLHE) going even at 10:00 AM during the week. Maybe I am just more used to playing during the day and feel nore comfortable. Who knows.

Re: Night play vs Day play
in general being alert and on you're A-game is more important than playing at the time of day when the action is best. The exceptions are the rare cases when UNBELIEVABLE games break out. These happen at night more often than not.
Of course reajusting you're schedule so that you are awake and feeling good during the wee hours is optimal. Obviously that's not possible for everybody |

Re: Night play vs Day play
I just don't see Wed. 2 pm ever getting as goofy as Fri/Sat 1-4 am.
Time does not seem to make as much a difference in LV as it does in LA. But I admit that I have no daytime mid-week experience in LA this year and only 2 hrs. mid-week evening play. As a fellow "geezer" I admit that particularly Friday night after a long week I am not at my best late. I have also learned to not go toe to toe with a wild table late at night. My results have not been good. But at our limits, ABC poker is going to cover the vast majority of what we encounter. If you can stay disciplined while discipline disappears around you, you can do well even if your are up past your bedtime. |

Re: Night play vs Day play
I usually play weekend afternoons - you see a mix of overnighters from Friday playing marathons, tourists just getting into town (playing before going out at night), and a heavy dose of locals. Locals are good news/bad news - most aren't very good, but aren't easy to stack off.

Re: Night play vs Day play
I have found that another really great time to play live is during the morning hours from around 7-11am. If I have had a really good night session, I will opt to sleep a few hours from 2-7 or so and wake up to play some of the most tired, rundown, stuck players you could imagine. There is no substitute to weekends (especially Fri/Sat nights) at a big live casino though.
