Justin Gatlin 8-year ban
Article
Wow this sucks. As a track and field fan, I am saddened as this is a bigger deal in the sports world than his world record. [ QUOTE ] His coach, Trevor Graham, who has been involved with at least a half-dozen athletes who have received drug suspensions, has contended Gatlin tested positive after a vengeful massage therapist used testosterone cream on the runner without his knowledge. [/ QUOTE ] Didn't Landis make a similar argument? Does anyone believe that these guys believe they are innocent? |

[ QUOTE ]
Didn't Landis make a similar argument? [/ QUOTE ] Landis gave so many explanations-none of them convincing that he probably didn't even know what argument he was actually making. [ QUOTE ] Does anyone believe that these guys believe they are innocent? [/ QUOTE ] No via Occam's razor |

Re: Justin Gatlin 8-year ban
He accepted the 8 year ban (as opposed to lifetime) to help with the investigation against his coach. If he believed that he was innoncent I doubt he would have agreed to this.

[/ QUOTE ] If you read the articles on this more carefully, they explain that he just agreed not to argue that the tests were faulty. He can still appeal the length of the ban, and plans to make a case explaining his extraordinary circumstances to reduce his suspension considerably. It's far from over. |

I'm glad to see that he's finally out of this sport. So unlike you, as a track and field fan and former athlete, I am thrilled to see him outed. |

[/ QUOTE ]The 8 year ban is pretty much a career ender anyway. [/ QUOTE ] Linford Christie won the Olympics at age 32 and at age 36 was DQ'd after 2 false starts. Gatlin will be 32 at the end of the ban, however it will not be in an Olympic year. I think the hardest part to overcome would be the inability to compete for the 8 years. Training without real competition for 8 years would make it hard to stay motivated, and financially able to train as much as needed. rJ_ |

So my view is basically, whatever, it's not like I have complete confidence that Asafa Powell is clean either. |

So my view is basically, whatever, it's not like I have complete confidence that Asafa Powell is clean either. [/ QUOTE ] The difference for me is this: Yes, Asafa Powell could be on something, just as any athlete in any sport could be, but with Powell its just a small doubt. On the other hand, with Gatlin, like I said, always been a liar and a cheater, always known he was a liar and a cheater. When, I was in high school, I had a track meet in the summer at the university of tennessee. Even then there were rumblings about him being on something. |
