Recently received a Pioneer 50" Plasma courtesy of Stars. Notify the cable company, they bring me a new DVR HD box, hook me up and tell me I'm good to go. Go to ESPN HD for the Spurs/Jazz game tonight, and the image has the black bars across the top and bottom and really looks like it can't handle the image when they go on a fast break. Like the midcourt logo is unreadable. I'm not a television expert so I thought I would post here for any advice.

If you have black bars across the top and bottom, something is wrong in the settings.

Also, the box was hooked up through one of the component input hookups. When I try to change the display on an HD channel, the box telling me what input I am using pops up, and it says '480i', regardless of whether or not I am on an HD channel.

So yeah, it's the settings most likely. edit: wait, could it possibly be from the DVR? I have a dvd recorder(separate from the cable box). The regular cable box goes to component 1, and the recorder goes to component 2. If I try to watch a HD program on component 2(dvd recorder) there are the black lines. So, could it be from the DVR, and maybe he should get a regular HD cable box? |

I could be wrong, but I'm not sure that component inputs support 720p. Don't you have to use HDMI inputs to get HD?

Pretty sure components support up to and including 720p. Above that, you need DVI/HDMI.

If your box is similar to mine (motorola for comcast), when the cable box is off, and the tv is still on, press menu on the cable box remote. This allows you to go to the settings for the cable box and you can see what the box is set to output for HD. For a plasma TV, you want your input coming in at 720p, which as said above can be done with the component video input. You can also experiment and see if it looks better with a 1080i signal as thats how the shows are actually being broadcast, and it might look better if the conversion is done in your TV instead of the box. 480i is definitely wrong and not hidef.
