Puzzle friend sent me.
"So apparently this is given to kids who are about to enter PRIMARY school in Russia. I couldnt solve it....
8809 = 6 7111 = 0 2172 = 0 6666 = 4 1111 = 0 3213 = 0 7662 = 2 9312 = 1 0000 = 4 2222 = 0 3333 = 0 5555 = 0 8193 = 3 8096 = 5 7777 = 0 9999 = 4 7756 = 1 6855 = 3 9881 = 5 5531 = 0 2581 = ?" Took me like 10 mins to figure out, and I went to Primary school in Russia... :\ Sorry if repost/wrong kinda content for forum - never posted here before. |

I got it in like 10 seconds for some reason. I can definitely see how it just wouldn't "click" for some people though. I guess you have to be thinking along certain lines.

i believe i got answer in white <font color="white">2581 = 2? 0, 6 and 9 are worth 1 8 is worth 2 everything else is worth 0 add up the digits based on their worth</font> |

My answer in white: <font color="white">you get one point for every closed circle in a digit. i.e. an "8" has two circles while a 6 or a 9 have only one. No other digits have enclosed circles. This from a guy who always colors in the circles for 0,6,and 9 when he is bored in meetings. </font> |

It's a VERY big clue to be told that it's a problem that young children can solve. That stops you from wasting time on all sorts of complicated patterns, to know that even simple multiplication is unlikely to be needed.
The fact that "4" does not appear in any of the examples given is also, in a way, a clue. |
