Smooth call or raise?
4-8 live game I am on off the button w aj, cant remember suited ot not, 1 maybe two limpers and I raise pf to 8. Sb bb and 1-2 limpers see a J 9 6 2 diamond flop. checks around to me I bet sb calls and bb raises, utg player folds... Raise every time here right? Or is smooth calling +ev? SB who is passive calling station and judging by the BB's stack he is either running well or has been playing a while. I'm wondering if its a standard raise here to isoloate w tptk or if smooth calling +ev ever. Thanks

Re: Smooth call or raise?
raise > call > fold

Re: Smooth call or raise?
reraise for value, you are ahead of both their ranges. SB is more likely to call 2 now than if you wait to raise turn, that line screams monster & even poor players can lay down to that action. plus if BB does have you beat with junk 2 pair, you avoid turn 3-bet.

Re: Smooth call or raise?
it's an okay raise, he has a huge draw, but he shouldn't want to push out all the other guys. if you didn't have a pair you'd potentially fold the turn though if he bet again, so i like it okay.

Re: Smooth call or raise?
I don't mind SC'ing here but raising is the superior play IMHO. I don't like SC'ing with just one pair on a reasonable drawy board. With the FD and SD out there and you facing two unknown hands from the blinds, pop it up here.
Yes you run the risk of chasing out someone who could potentially pay you off, but your hand, while strong, is nowhere near a lock. |

Re: Smooth call or raise?
sb calls one more bet bc i smooth call w a gutshot and 1 over Q8,spikes a q, we check it down, I lose to the 4 outer cause he was priced in. then the fish leaves because hes up... oops
