Citizens of SoCal mark you calendars...Great God Debate 2/25
To be held in LA at 2pm. Come see Eddie Tabash bash the believer (hopefully). You might even get to pigeon-hole him afterward about the Ugly Anti-Internet Gambling Law or whatever it's called. Tabash is a constitutional lawyer and frequently lobbies people like Pelosi in DC on civil liberties issues. It would be nice to get him on our side, or at least have him aware of the fact that our issues are in some ways his issues and this has thus far been a victory for the Religious Right that has escaped notice of his ilk (and I say that affectionately, as he is a very nice fellow to chat with). I don't know much about his opponent, except that apparently he is intelligent and articulate. Perhaps you can pigeon hole HIM afterward and inquire as to why HIS ilk hates freedom so. Should be a good show. http://www.cfiwest.org/calendar/GodDebate.htm |

Don't know much about the guy, but that seems like a decent enough excuse for a road trip and long weekend in L.A. Thanks for the info.

Wow, I'd bet he'd be tickled pink to learn that out-of towners came by to hear the debate.
The more I think about it, the better I think this is a chance to clue him wrt the online gaming stuff and the Religious Wrong's efforts on its behalf. Typically after talks at the CFI-West the participants mingle with the crowds and discuss the issues covered in greater detail. They're located on Hollywood Blvd., ironically not far from several Scientology Headquarters (you can actually visit a restaurant on the grounds that, amazingly, is said to be a) not half bad and b) sans any proseletizing, something they are notoriusly aggressive at in just about every thing they do). Nearby is the California Griffith Park Observatory, with several great hiking trails and stupendous views of LA County. Not far away is Thai Town and Korea-town with tremendous eatieries from each respective culture plus that notorious party-till-5-am soju-drinking nightlife in the latter, and of course on Melrose you can still catch the 20-something B-tier starlets if you're lucky (or so I'm told, unless they've moved on). The theatre attached to CFI-West has two well-reviewed shows at the moment, "The Beastly Bombing (about two pairs of bumbling, likeable mad bombers, one arab and one from the KKK, and a plot to blow up the Brooklyn Bridge) and "The Tomorrow Show" which I don't know much about except lots of folks say it's very funny. Could be a great trip for both heathens and hedonists, I'd say. And gamblers...the world's largest cardroom is just down the 5 freeway--see Pai Gow Poker action at 10K/hand where they plop chips like they're tossing peanuts to gorillas (This is the Commerce Club, of course). |

Hrm. I can see the CFI-West building from the sidewalk in front of my house. Thanks for the headsup; might have to check it out.

Actually it's at 2pm, well BEFORE the Oscars.
But even better, the debate is being held on Hollywood Blvd just a few blocks from the Oscars' Kodak Theatre venue, ALSO on Hollywood Blvd. You can do your heathen duty and then head down the 2 1/2 miles to cheer on the arrival of celeb atheists like Angelina Jolie and boo xemu-tainted clowns like Tom Cruise. Then grab a hot dog at Skooby's and drive over to the Commerce Casino and win back the cost of the trip in the top section. |
