Cool Bo Jackson article
http://www.kansascity.com/180/story/124608.html (I don't think you will have to register.)
I grew up in KC and remember pretty much all of these exploits vividly - either live, on TV or on the radio. I listened to "The Throw" on the radio, and it still gives me goosebumps. If that thing had happened in NY or during the playoffs, it would be one of the great legendary plays in baseball history. It really was true when Bo was playing you never wanted to miss a game, because you never knew what crazy thing he might do. |

none of these are on youtube, unfortunately.
bo jackson got hurt the year i seriously started following baseball, and now I feel like I missed something. While I sincerely doubt Jackson would've made the HOF as Baird claims, I don't know that there will be a talent like him for a long time. |

Yeah The Throw never was filmed very well unfortunately. It was a road game in Seattle and I don't know if it was televised in either market. Everything else was caught pretty well on film. Maybe somebody will make a cool compilation or HBO will do a documentary one of these days. There is this:
http://www.amazon.com/Bo-Knows-Jackson/dp/6302236096 From one of the reviews: "Most notable were Bo's 'walking on the wall' catch, amazing outfield assists, home run during 89 MLB all star game, 'running-into-tunnel' after TD, as well as the 'play' that triggered his injury and retirement." But I'd really like to see HBO do a really quality documentary about him. |

Re: Cool Bo Jackson article
Yeah Posnaski is incredible. He won the sportswriter of the year award a couple years ago. The Kansas City Star really has more than their fair share of sports columnists with him and Whitlock right now (they used to be just horrible before these two came along - Gib Twyman and Jonathan Rand - lol). I read them both over anyone in LA or SF, and not just for the KC-centric stuff.
Whitlock used to say a lot of stuff just for the sake of being controversial IMO, but in the last few years he's really come into his own. His work on the Don Imus firing was really eye-opening to me, and has gotten him a lot of national attention. Despite his protests that he likes it in the midwest, he's probably going to get lured to one of the coasts pretty soon. Posnaski isn't flashy, photogenic or controversial enough I'm afraid. He's stuck in the midwest. |

Re: Cool Bo Jackson article
I was watching the game on TV when Bo struck out and then broke the bat over his thigh, he snapped it like a matchstick. That was when I knew he was more than just Nike hype. I remember a highlight of the throw, and as a Pirates fan who saw Clemente in his prime, I would have to say the throw would have made even the Great One smile.

Baseball's "glory" days for me consisted of Ricky, Kirby, Jr., and Bo. Miss those days.

Re: Cool Bo Jackson article
It was real real real tough on KC fans when he went to the Raiders. Nothing even comes close in terms of hatred for a KC sports fan than the Raiders. It would be like Tom Brady pitching for the Yankees or something.
Maybe John Elway would be up there for KC fans. But that's more hatred for what he did to us than a personal thing. We personally HATE the Raiders. Although we've owned them for so long now I've actually caught myself starting to feel sorry for them sometimes. Karma baby! Still doesn't stop me from watching 100 times on Tivo that Larry Johnson plunge with 5 seconds left. God that was sweet. |
