Justification for not giving to beggars on the street
Which of the following trains of thought, if any, seem justifiable/ethical to you as reasons for not giving money to the homeless/beggars on the street.
(1) He seems able-bodied. I work my ass off- why isn't he working? (2) He's just going to spend it on booze/drugs. Why should I contribute to this? (3) I give a respectable portion of my income to legitimate charities already. (4) I can't afford to give a buck to every beggar I see. Therefore, it behooves me to not give to ANY of them, because then i'm in the game of picking and choosing, which is unfair to those who don't get my money. (5) Having homeless people roaming the streets is a threat to law-abiding citizens, and a health hazard. By giving them handouts, I am encouraging them to loiter in my neighborhood and continue to pose a threat to women and children. By not giving, I am indirectly encouraging them to head to shelters, where they are likely better off anyway. Feel free to expound on your selection(s). |

I don't care. That's my only thought.

Normally I just challenge them to a quick IQ test, if they beat me I occasionally toss them a few dimes.

Re: Justification for not giving to beggars on the street
I choose 1, 2, 3 and 5. I used to stop and offer a job to anyone I saw with a "I will Work for Food" sign. I gave them my business card and offered them a ride. No one ever took me up on my offer. Now I just swerve my car towards them when I see them on an exit ramp. Somehow it is more satisfying. Oddly enough I voted to give that same bum a delicious breakfast. Re: Justification for not giving to beggars on the street
If I've got some change in my pocket that I'm not going to spend anyway (dimes and nickels and such), I'll give it if I don't have to dig in my pockets too hard.
If someone is performing and playing music or something, I'm much more generous. |

I choose #3. Giving to beggars may make me feel better, but it doesn't so as much good as other methods.

I work for 5.50 an hour, so could they with minimal effort, I dont make enough to give them money, I work 100 times harder than they do with school and work

Re: Justification for not giving to beggars on the street
I once worked at a rehab clinic, and the director explained to us how he never gives money to the homeless, but instead when he gives, he'll give food or something similar. He said that the vast majority end up using the money on booze and drugs, and that he will not be an enabler. Instead, he will get them what everyone who gives money hopes they are using the money to get....food, water, and shelter.

Re: Justification for not giving to beggars on the street
especially here in MN there are plenty of social services and homeless shelters to help these people get off and stay off the streets if they truly want to.
Me and a buddy in high school were walking downtown eating some taco bell, when a homeless guy wedges his way between us and starts saying how hungry he is. He says the only thing he has eaten in the last week was a sandwich he had to fight away from a dog. My friend wasn't saying anything, so finally I offer him the rest of my Chili Cheese Burrito(which had I only taken one bite from), to which the homeless man replies, "Aww, man thats gross! You've been eating off that!" He realizes we aren't going to give him any money and goes off to bother other people. |
