Default stud hi/lo live 6/12

What kind of bankroll do I need for 6/12 7cs hi/lo live? What would the variance be like? How much could I expect to make per hour?

I'm pretty comfortable sitting down with $200-300 and the assurance that I get paid every two weeks, but you might want a little bit more of a buffer than that. Your personal bankroll requirements will depend on your win rate, standard deviation, and exactly how bummed you'll be if you get broke. Have you played a bunch of stud/8 elsewhere, say online? How have you done? Have you read Zee the requisite 20-30 times?

Variance is generally lower in split-pot games, although you do have the potential to lose a lot on a single hand. I don't keep track of my win rate, but I'd guess that for $6/12 stud/8 it's around $20/hr. The 300 BB guideline commonly cited for LHE and stud can probably be shaded. $2000 should be overkill. If you have a $1000 downswing, there's an excellent chance that you can't play.

If the $6/12 game in question happens to be at Canterbury Park, just remember not to mess with the Amish guy.

Basic general guesstimates.

I like 300 BB live, regardless of the game.

So I'd like $1,500 - $2,000 just for poker. This assumes you could make 1-1.5 BB hour live. If you make less, you might need more $$ at some random point in the future.

If you are willing to play lower when you run bad, $1,000 is a good starter bankroll. (This assumes you won't pay your rent, car payment etc. out of this---poker only!!!)

If you can win at that rate, then you could make $12-$15 an hour. Top of the line players can make a little more.

These are wild generalizations based on a solid winning player in an average to soft game.

If you are not a top player for these stakes, or the game is tough, you will not realize the above.

good luck.

$6/12 is probably going to be the lowest limit available for a live split-pot game.

Probably---which makes another point. If he can beat 6/12 split for anything decent, he should (repeat, 'if' and 'should') be able to survive at any lower game while riding out a bad streak.

Hopefully the OP is either proficient at more than one game or will learn another one or two along the way.

I haven't had any experience in 7cs hi/lo yet. I play mostly small to mid buyin NL tournaments online and I'd like to become an all around better player. I need to work on learning more forms and playing live. Have any of you guys used wilsons turbo poker programs as training aids? If so what did you think of their value?

I think you'd get much better training playing in small games online. Those games are likely to be tougher than the local $6/12.

Split games with high rakes are IMO killers. Edit: Specially low limit

The suggestion of online games appears to be quite sound.

To those of you that have experience playing live limit omaha hi/lo and live stud hi/lo: which game do you think would be more profitable for a live 6/12 table?

I would say bad players go broke faster in 7cs hilo. I also find it the more interesting game. When I play hi/lo I have (in the past) usually played a OE rotation game or perhaps HOE (holdem/omaha-8/stud-8).
