Sports Team Names.
OK, so sports team names are pretty stale.
Names like Jaguars, Panthers, Lions, Tigers, etc. have all become hackneyed. So what are some sports team names that you'd like to see? When the Houston 1836 MLS team had to change their name to Dynamo (because the number 1836 is rac.ist obv.), I submitted Houston Halcyon for consideration. Dictionary.com defines Halcyon as: A kingfisher, especially one of the genus Halcyon. A fabled bird, identified with the kingfisher, that was supposed to have had the power to calm the wind and the waves while it nested on the sea during the winter solstice. adj. Calm and peaceful; tranquil. Prosperous; golden: halcyon years. I liked the idea of a fabled bird who calms the storms. Especially since hurricanes are prevalent in the Gulf. Also, IIRC, El Nino is supposed to be near the winter soltice. I googled Halcyon and this image popped up. Also, a fundamentally sound team should perform at a peaceful, tranquil level. That's stretching it, but anyway... What are some new names you'd like to see enter into the sports lexicon??? |

Re: Sports Team Names.
For some reason I don't like team names that aren't plural.
Stanford Cardinal always messes me up. I don't like singular words that could be plural, and I don't like singular words like "Heat" or "Magic" that are just concepts. I do like the old-school animals/people/things model, though I agree teams should expand to better varieties of it. |

Re: Sports Team Names.
Their was a contest thing to submit names in for the new Charlotte NBA team. I submitted the Galloping Dreadlocked Phantoms, but apparently it wasnt one of the three chosen.

Snakes on a Plane, obviously... [/ QUOTE ] My Master League team in Winning Eleven is named Snakes on a Field, and in each fantasy football league I play as Snakes on a Team. |
