Default NJ Gov\'t Shutdown

I'm not from NJ, but have been reading about the government shutdown that's threatening to shut the casinos as well.

By all accounts it seems that the shutdown has been done entirely by the Democratic Party. How bad are the divisions in the NJ Democratic party that they're allowing the GOP to sit back while they let themselves implode? Do they all hate Corzine that bad? What's the deal, Jersey-ites?

Most Jerseyites are too stupid to understand why things like this happen. That's how people like Corzine get in.

As a Jerseyite who doesn't much follow state politics, I think the entire problem stems from the fact that Corzine is demanding some sort of sustainable revenue stream to plug the state's huge deficit (prmarily an increase of the sales tax), instead of the one-shot stopgap measures that have gotten Jersey so far into debt. Corzine's opponents in the assembly do not want this, they think the 4 billion dollars can be saved through budget cuts.

Eventually there will be some sort of compromise. I'm expecting a sales tax of 6.5% in NJ (it's currently 6, Corzine wants to raise it to 7). I don't think a deficit this huge can be plugged by spending cuts alone.

Spending cuts also prevent future debts. This is just common sense, the current budget costs more than it brings in.
