Is there anybody with advanced pc knowledge that can explain to me why Star's "new security feature" adds anything to security?
As I see it it's just an extra password. Well, if hackers can get hold of one password I'm sure they can get hold of two? What happened to the seemingly very appealing ideas of being able to tie the log in to one specific mac address or IP address ... I would feel safe if I knew the only computer that could log in to my account was my laptop? Or what about a system where change of email or other account information mandated a telephone call to your home? Star's email: > As part of our efforts to keep customer accounts as secure as possible, PokerStars is introducing a new security feature. [...] > > In addition to your PokerStars password, we can now issue you with an extra login credential known as a "Secure ID". This is a randomly generated 7 digit code that you will be asked to enter each time you access your PokerStars account. The Secure ID will provide a secondary layer of authentication, helping to protect your account against unauthorized access. We therefore strongly recommend that you make use of this feature. > [...] > > Regards, > PokerStars Security Team |

well it adds something in that people who are really bad at making passwords can make ones that are harder to crack...
but yeah your ideas are much more effective (of course provided they are optional) |

I would like if people had the option (but not requirement by default), of using like a security USB key on top of their password to log on to their account.
(speaking of which, on an OT note, I want one of the pstars USB keys/MP# players in the FPP store). |

SecureID does add a lot of security. If you're not familiar with it, it generates a rolling random number constantly--every several seconds, the number changes. You type in your ID/password and the current random number assigned specifically to your account. In other words, your password combination is constantly changing.
SecureID is very common for remote access to confidential computer systems. I told them I'd give it a try, but it might end up being a hassle. Oh, and I don't like the idea of locking your account to one MAC address. I use my home computer, my laptop, my computer at my Mom's house, and would use my wife's laptop if one of mine was unavailable for some reason. I would hate to have to register a new MAC address every time I get a new computer. Plus, MAC addresses can EASILY be spoofed. -Z EDIT: Ah, nevermind, if this isn't actually SecurID, but just some assigned additional passcode. |

I signed up and they sent me a 7 digit password.
Its a small extra hassle, but I think its worth it for this reason: If your account gets hacked and you don't have their extra level of security, they might baulk and say "Well, we warned you". But if you sign up for their PokerStars sponsored extra layer of security I think it will be easier to get your money back. |
